Krystle J. McLaughlin earned a BA in Physics from Colgate University in 2006, followed by a PhD in Biophysics at the University of Rochester in 2011. She was then a postdoctoral scholar in the SPIRE program at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which emphasized teaching and pedagogical training, along with traditional research. Dr. McLaughlin joined the Vassar Chemistry department in 2017.
Research in the McLaughlin Lab is focused on studying proteins from diverse microbial systems including bacteria from the gut microbiome strain Bacteroides ovatus, investigating the machinery that helps transfer antibiotic resistance in Staphyococcus & Salmonella, and genomic orphans from Mycobacterium phages. The lab makes primary use of macromolecular x-ray crystallography, along with several other biochemical & biophysical methods including fluorescence anisotropy, to investigate protein structure and function.
She teaches General Chemistry (Chem 108/109), Protein Chemistry (Chem 323), and Biochemistry (Chem 272).
